In a election year when celebrity has become a contested issue it’s nice to pause and honor the passing of Hollywood celebrity who cared deeply about his craft, stayed down to earth, and engaged generously in peace and social justice work. So I want to say thank you and farewell to Paul Newman. Newman was a vocal critic of the Vietnam war. He supported more rational approaches to defense policy and defense spending as an activist and more formally as an adviser to the Center for Defense Information and World Security Institute. Back when Peace Action was known as the Nuclear Freeze movement Newman was a public spokesperson for the Freeze campaign. Newman, who Jimmy Carter appointed as a delegate to a UN General Assembly session on disarmament, is seen in the video above above (and in this other clip) debating Charlton Heston about the Freeze.
