A 4-day/20-hour workweek was so far out, that 5-day/40-hour workweek seemed very reasonable. Full citizenship and guaranteed full employment for “Negroes” was unthinkable, but next to that, simply outlawing slavery (except in the case of people convicted of crimes) sounded like a very workable solution.

Radicals and progressives need to push, shove, and shout; not at Republicans, but at Democrats.
